This was the project, 20 years ago, that truly solidified what I wanted to do. I had an assignment due, but we already had weekend plans in NYC, so I took my camera and thought, I’ll just find something to photograph. I hit the streets with a single roll of 24 exposure film and shot only what spoke to me.

Overshooting wasn’t a thing back then. You had to wait for the moment. You had to be sure. You had to get the exposure right and manually focus every frame.

And then… you waited. Wondering if you’d captured anything good at all. There was patience in it. Excitement too. Then came the darkroom, where you had to make sure you didn’t ruin it all. In complete darkness, senses heightened, carefully cracking open the film canister and winding the film onto the developing reel by touch alone. Then the process would begin — precise control of temperature, timing, chemistry. Developer, stop bath, fixer. Washing. Drying. Waiting. Only then would you finally see what those images could become.

And even after that, you still had to choose the image, develop it and print it. Again and again until it was just right. Watching the photograph slowly appear on paper under the glow of the enlarger felt like magic every single time. The relief when it worked was incredible. It was art from start to finish.

No overshooting. No automatic tracking. No fixing things later in Photoshop. And honestly… I miss it.

That process taught me to slow down, stay present, and nail the shot in-camera. Once. I really believe that foundation still shapes the way I shoot today. But I think it’s time I brought back that feeling again — the discipline and excitement of making just one frame truly count.

When I presented the assignment, my tutor looked at me and said, “This is it. This is what you’re meant to do.”

And so I did.

Are the images perfect? Hell no! But I love them for what they sparked inside of me.

So I stumbled across a self portrait I took of myself and my little one in my old family home where I grew up. I took this image right before my parents sold their house of 34 years. It is a window outside my childhood bedroom, a window that I sat at so often and a view that is etched into my memory. The feeling that I felt looking at this image was overpowering. And I think that is because of the memory attached. The sadness, the happiness. And it got me thinking…. what feelings will come up for my kids when they look back at images of them around our current home? Do I capture that enough? Do you?
